I recently bought this camera primarily because I wanted a compact camera with RAW image capture capability. This camera offers that and a lot more besides. I use it for some of my stock photos with success. When set at ISO 80 it produces absolutely superb images. The sensor is 12 MP and there is a 6 X zoom. You have the option of using a built in flash or using an external flash mounted o the cameras hot shoe. Image preview is great on this 3 inch display. It offers a detailed review where as there is a cropped section of the screen where it displays a magnified view . This really helps you to see quickly if the focus was right on or missed. This is not a ideal low light camera. Daylight and well illuminated scenes are what this camera excels at. Macro capability is excellent as well. One thing I should note here is the build quality. This camera is nearly 100 percent metal. There is nothing cheap about the workmanship. You will not fl as if you are using a toy by any means. Seriously, this camera is superior to many DSLRs. Check it out if you need something you can carry with you about anywhere you go without feeling weighted down.

I purchased the G9 a few months ago. I definately love it! I can carry it anywhere, attach my flash, and even get a waterproof casing for it (which I have). :) I have several files online taken by this camera.

The G9 is the next thing on my list but I've been waiting for the price to go down and it doesn't want to. I'm stubborn about paying more than $420 for it because it has several flaws that keep it from being the perfect compact.

Among the negatives: slow operation (shot-to-shot), high shutter lag, small viewfinder, too many megapixels (6MP or 8MP max would have been great), noisy above ISO 200, lens is not as bright as previous versions (I would have preferred f/2.0-3.0 with a 3x zoom), almost unusable viewfinder...

I just hope there will be a G10 which fixes most of these flaws.

Ray the G9 doesn't produce a much better image than the G7. In fact, considering it has more megapixels, it might actually produce a noisier image. However, since it has RAW you might be able to recover some quality in post processing.
If I were you, I wouldn't upgrade from the G7 to the G9 just for the sake of image quality.

I bought the G9 before Christmas. It is a great camera but there is a lot of noise in low light and if you don't get the exposure spot on. This is visible at 80iso. Sometimes I am amazed how good it is and other times I am a bit disappointed. I will only use it when it isn't possible to use my dSLR.

Hi there - I'm new to Stock Photography and I'm glad to hear that people are having success with the Canon G9 - I bought this right before the Holidays and so far I am loving it. It is so easy to bring with you everywhere and the detail is awesome with 12 MP. I have had some pictures refused due to noise so I'm trying to work this out, if anyone has some tips I would appreciate them. I invested in the underwater case for this camera and took it on a trip down south this winter - it was a conversation starter everywhere we went (almost looks like a toy camera) but it was great for snorkeling :)

The only SLR camera I have is film (Nikon F100) rather than digital - I often feel guilty leaving this camera sitting behind when I opt to use the G9 because I invested so much money on it and some great lenses but is it even possible to produce film prints for Stock photography???? (any info on this would also be appreciated)

Thanks everyone - I'm so excited to be learning all about Stock Photography and I had my first picture accepted today :)

Sometimes noise shows in parts of a photo, like a blue sky. I reduce the noise in those ares but don't apply noise reduction to all of the photo. You can do this with the blur tool in photoshop or with software like noise ninja or neat image.
