I looked at my online files this morning and saw the "level" symbol on one was red instead of yellow. That's weird, I wonder why? I never even looked at the Downloads column.
I clicked the symbol to see if it would bring up a legend and saw my picture was Level 2 which meant it had been downloaded between one and four times.
I thought, No, that's not right. Then I looked at the downloads column. Sure enough the photo had been sold.
My first photo was accepted by Dreamstime (only one) on 5/31. Four others had been rejected for corporate logos. I was able to remove the logos and the same shots were approved on 6/6. So I sold my first photo five weeks after my first approved upload.
The shot that sold was of the tortoise Lonesome George in the Galapagos Islands. I was there in November and got a shot of him from the back. He wasn't very animated and I waited for him to move so I could get a better shot be he never turned around. Honestly I think the pic sold because he recently died (he was over 100) and was in the news, not because it's a great shot, but that doesn't diminish the excitement of getting my first sale.
My weekend just got off to a good start! |

Thanks everyone! Hey Progman2011, you need to put up more photos, that's a strong six. Working my way through the rest of the profiles of people who responded to this. Almost afraid to look, I don't want to see how much better other people's eyes are than mine... ;-) |

Thanks Enigmacypher. I wouldn't say wildlife is my favorite subject especially. My wife and I travel and for that trip to the Galapagos Islands I rented a nice telephoto lens, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM. The quality of the equipment - combined with the relatively rare subject matter - is probably why a lot of those photos got accepted on Dreamstime.
I recently submitted a bunch of shots from a trip to Vietnam in 2010 but not a single one was approved! My primary lens at the time - Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM - might be part of the reason, I bought it used and cheap. It was OK, but I'm not sure it was up to the quality Dreamstime is looking for. (That lens broke on my Galapagos trip forcing me to rely on the rented telephoto for the most part.)
Today my primary lens is the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L USM (not the II which I think is coming out this month). It's better than the 28-135mm but not perfect, I do have some reservations.
I like shooting in Manhattan where I live but it can be tricky keeping corporate logos and protected architecture out of my shots. And trying to avoid people is almost impossible (I won't even TRY to get model releases from crowds of strangers).
As I go along I hope to get a wider variety of things accepted here. I'm slowly looking over my older pics for things that might be appropriate. |
