I just had my first illustration approved, so I'm real excited! It's nothing special, but it is actually the very first illustration I've ever made! (I downloaded Inkscape last week.) This was so much fun, I think I'll do it again. :)

Rccster: AI seems really complicated! So many features for a noobie... I once downloaded the free trial, but I didn't even know where to start. It's good though, when you know what you're doing, I'm sure. Maybe some day... :) |

Woodwind: At first glace AI seems really complicated but it's actually kind of intuitive. I have to admit though that i watched a lot of youtube-tutorials, that's the best way of learning it's basic features i think :) Go for it! |

Thanks! Yes, Inkscape is nice; it reminds me of a program I used to have om my old Mac -MacDraw- that you could just open and go right ahead and begin making illustrations with.
May I ask you something? :) I want to upload a vector file as the additional file. Now, in Inkscape, with my SVG file open, I go to Save as and choose .eps. Is that correct? Will that be a vector file and is that all I have to do? (Compared to jpg where you have to export bitmap, open with for example Adobe and save as jpg.) |

It depends. If you don't use transparencies, blurs and gradients, you can "save as" EPS directly with Inkscape.
If you use gradients, you must open the SVG file with AI and then save it as AI and/or EPS.
If you use transparencies or blurs, you can't upload the EPS file.
Just a suggestion/info. You can create the JPG file from the SVG with Gimp (free software, it opens the SVG files).

So what you're saying is that if i do use gradiants and don't have AI - I'm toast? No way around it?
And when I try to save as eps in Inkscape, the file size ranges from 11kB to 50+MB! It's like I have no clue about what the outcome is going to be. Then opening the eps with (a very old version!) of Adobe Photoshop... It doesen't look like much. A one layer image. Is that really a vector? The svg file feels much more useful...
I don't know how much sense I'm making. I'm a bit lost myself. :P |

Unfortunately yes, if you use gradients you can't save the EPS with Inkscape (in the first years here on DT they accepted this as a vector, but since 1-2 years not anymore).
Regarding the KB, generally the EPS is similar to the SVG file. 50MB is too much (something wrong).
If you open a vector EPS file with Photoshop, the software rasterize it, so you'll have a raster image (jpg, tiff, bmp, ecc.), not a vector, even if the original file is a vector. If you want to check the vector EPS file you need a software like AI, but I think you can find some free softwares to open vector files (any suggestions from other users?).

Unfortunately, your image (Owl?) probably has a gradient for the background and trying to change to a eps file in inkscape, will not work without changing the main illustration and eps file will be rejected for not being the same..
Your Owl will be just fine as an jpeg. I did the same on some of my first illustration until I figured out what I was doing wrong. Roberto helped me out a lot. So, for your next illustration, use no gradients, no fill ins, no transparents and no blurs in Inkscape.
Then you should not have any problem in changing your illustration into a vector in inkscape.
Then you will need gimp to convert to a png and then to a jpeg.
Or you can use the AI program..(I do not have that one, so I can not give any advice or hints)

Impressive first try :)
Regarding gradients, if you remove transparency of the gradient it can be exported as an eps and accepted with no problem, I already have some using this technique.
When you make the gradient, click on the lighter part (the ball) then move the opacity slide on the Fill and Stroke. Make it 100% (completely opaque). You will have a color with no gradient. Then, on flat color box, choose HSL tab, and slide L bar to a lighter color, or even a different color. Make sure there are no transparencies and you're ready to go.
On EPS box I use 300 DPI for rasterization, convert text to paths, and rasterize filter effects (I dont use them, but anyway...). Also I choose PostScript level 3. |
