Dear People,

I know these subject has been Coined before.... Sometimes it seems that making Enough Money with Microstock is just for The Happy (and hard working) few....

I am new here , but i've been shooting images as a hobby for the past 20 years.
Since i Don't like going to the processes with 'the other agencies' and , since I like the DT approach i decided 2 go exclusive....

I 've been seeing people with small portfolio's en lots a sales and vice versa .
Actually Me myself, I am doing well, it's my owm development that counts...

But, let's say you make 20 images a day which are approved, 5 days a week.
That's 400 a month. After one year that is approx 5000 images , after 2 years 10.000....

I believe at that point you can make a living with DT only, being Exclusive...
What are your thoughts en feelings about this ?

Stanley

He he, if you make 20/day quality images, than WOW, you are the master, you could live from microstock.

In my opinion, if you make 5 images/day (quality images, and stock oriented), after one year you should receive at least 500$/month.

I've read once that on average, after a year, you can earn 17 cents per file online, per month. I guess with high quality images this could be (much?) more.
But I agree with Gyeah, 20 HQ images per day is sort of a challenge ;)

Good luck!

I am talking about putting them on one Agency here: DT , ecxlusive.
At this moment I can only submit 2 (3) images a day, approval rate is going slowely up cause when i started only 2 out of 72 got approved .... (march).

What I like to do is creating concept images of the City where i Live, Amsterdam
It's a very rich enviroment.
I have a part time job for 3 days . So....

I think it's possible , but it's hard working.

Living is expensive in our part of the world.
Making a living from stock therefore is hard.
With 5000 pics online (after your first year;)) you 'should' earn about 850 dollars, wich is not enough to live from.
I guess that is why most 'professional' microstockers upload to many sites.

I understand. With my part time job I make 1200 euro ( approx 1500 dollar) each 4 weeks.
What you are saying that 850 dollar a month for 5000 pics is a sort of ongoing from month to month etc etc .

Submitting to the other agencies was a horrible experience....
There for I went exlusive which raises exposure and pay out....

Producing photos is one thing, but, as you wrote, you have a high rejection rate limiting you to 3 images daily.

Of those images daily, they still have to pass before review for quality and composition and meet the needs and standards of DT and their buyers.

I started off in a similar fashion like you with a high rejection and am slowly working at increasing. Thus, I am now starting to see more sales.

What I'm trying to say, it's harder than it looks.

Good luck.

A.

My approval rate for the past weeks is okay...
You are not reading very well....

During march and another first month when I started I had 72 rejections out of
74.... Those numbers are still counting in my total approval ratings...

Approval for the past weeks = > 50 procent so....

I do understand the review process and the difference between
a- making images
b- passing the reviews
c- selling

Please read before giving advice....

OK.
I think IF you can upload 20 HQ images per day, every day, then yes, after a few years you could earn a living just here on DT.

But: uploading 20 HQ pics a day is very hard to achieve, especially for someone in your situation with another job to work, and because of a low AR at this moment, wich is hard to raise in itself (and therefore at this moment even keeps you from uploading more than 3 pics HQ OR poor quality).

I think if you want to go for it, just do it and upload as many HQ pics as you can, being VERY selective about your pics, taking care to upload 3 every day of wich you are certain that they will be approved. Thus raising your AR as fast as possible at this moment. And off course hoping that the maximum upload will be raised some day soon.

If you can mass produce images. Sort of what I do when I have classes. You can. I use a 533MHz processor and render images all day. I usually make 10-20 images per day - when I'm not feeling lazy, which has a good AR.

So if you could get your hands on a core quad with a lot of ram, you can produce up to 100 images a day. You just have to take time to set them.

Ok. so that's 10 - 20 USD, depending on how well you have made your images. That's 500 - 1K Philippine Peso which is enough to support a family here in the Philippines.

And that does not even include sold photos. =)

For me I believe anything is possible, I join dreamstime in April last year and I started to upload picture May this year. Things are a bit slow for the beginning but I set my first target , That is before end of this year I would like to have at less a download a day.
This month I manage to keep the download in place, 6 download for day 6 of Nov. I also decided to be exclusive in Dreamstime and waiting for the approval.
I vote for quality then quantity therefore keeping a good quality profile is my aim . Well done to all those that have it . Work hard and make our dreams come too.!!!

I believe it depends on the quality of your pictures rather than the quantity. Yeah, I know it's a fresh idea to throw at anyone here, but hey, you get to find that some pictures wouldn't sell at all.

I guess the quantity helps expose your portfolio, but what they choose to buy after all? Right, you never know. You just know that your coffee beans need to be the best, and the subject you shoot should be the one they look for.

Anyways, I have people on my list who make a hundred bucks with over 2000 pics in their porfolio, and twice as much with just 200 uploaded images. There is no simple answer. I guess many of us here strive to make a living, though for some it's just a hobby which pays back. So, I guess it's also about your goals and dreams. And as I said I'd look for quality first rather than the quantity. You understand, I am not discussing your pictures here. Just generally speaking.

Maybe pople like Yuri Arcus made a living from this, but just amateurs like me, it's only a hobby. I've made less than 2000$ in the 3 years I've been here, so I can't think in living from this, it's just a monthly boost that allows me improve my photoigraphic equipment ;)

Yeah, I suppose anything is possible. Personally, I'm not sure I could do it. I suppose as long as you set realistic goals that you think you can achieve based on past numbers, then you'll probably be able to get there.

Maybe you should consider other outlets ... assignments, events, editorial???

Choose to be a professional photographer rather than a professional micorstock photographer.

Also, a lot depends on how much you do NOT spend on getting the image.

I think if you can produce 20 GQ images per day you will make much more money doing regular commercial photographic job. To my mind microstock is good for challenge, communication, training new techniques, just keeping hand on pulse and uploading pictures which you made without client's order - as experiment, fun or exersise. To try make your living from here nowadays is same as to kill yourself and camera. Because it's shutter resourse will finish long before it pays off.
