hey all im looking to make a new website so I can sell prints aswell as show off my images from here. Im working on a bit of a budget but want to find a website where you can make your own site and pay for a domain.

I already heard about clikpic.com but I think you only get to upload 10 images to the site for the initial price. Anyway if anyone knows of any id be really greatful if you could let me know

Thanks all

Hi Ant,

These days I started thinking of this exact idea.

Currently I bought hosting services (1.99$ per month) with unlimited storage, unlimited bandwidth and you get domain name for life for FREE.

It's the best offer I found and I got a lot of reccomandations for it.
If you want to check it out, this is the URL:
www.webhostingpad.com

My next step is to decide what exactly do I want in my web site and how to deploy it.

I hope I'll have time soon to continue working on it as it really excites me,
Ami.

I actually think the base price at Clikpic includes 60 images.
Take a look at zenfolio.com. They have good integration for selling prints, the galleries look good too.

If you need a domain for your site, all you need to do is go through a domain registry which allows Domain Forwarding. They will use their own Name Servers to direct your domain to any web address you like.

Then you can host your portfolio on any sort of portfolio hosting site which only gives you a folder or subdomain (ie, www.portfoliohost.com/yourname/ or yourname.portfoliohost.com), and direct people there using your own domain (ie, www.yourname.com).

Zenfolio.com has a good rep, and so does Smugmug.com. Those are probably the most used nowadays. I remember using portfolio.com way back, but that's only because I was offered the service free through another connection. Having my own web servers I don't seek out these kind of services unless I'm given an account, but that's not to say that you shouldn't. ;) I have a portfolio on musecube.com (http://musecube.com/ned/) and used to have one on onemodelplace.com, because those are sources for my models. Sometimes I toss up photos there that I don't feel like putting on my own website (cyclopsphoto.ca), but their interface is rather fugly.

I agree to never mix up domain with hosting. If your hoster suddenly decides to charge 19$ per month instead of 1.9$, or starts selling shoes or adds ads to your site, leaving it, you will lose the "free" domain and all associated SEO and links.

For prints and artsy stuff, good old DeviantArt is still an option.

I use Smugmug, and I'm quite happy with them. With Smugmug, you can use whatever domain name you like and have it replace the name.smugmug.com address. Mine is currently reeddaigle.smugmug.com. They have a deal with GoDaddy for registering your domain name, though I've already had a domain registered through DomainRegistry for a while. I just haven't gotten around to changing the name yet.
It's $150/yr for the pro level, and there's unlimited storage. You can set your own prices and what you'd like to sell, as well. It's very customizable, too. I forgot the features and prices of the other levels.
I'm sounding too much like a commercial for them. I've just had a good experience so far.
Zenfolio looks quite nice, too, by the way. I'd already chosen SmugMug, but I've looked at a few portfolios on Zenfolio, and they look great. And I think Zenfolio also has unlimited storage for the higher levels, and it's a bit cheaper than SmugMug, too.

thanks all for the info. Ive looked at everything you all said and to be honest clikpic.com still looks the best option. Im currently with weebly and they are exactly the same as all the sites you said but are very limited. Im trying to get as close to a professional site as I can possibly get so I think if anyone knows any others I will probably go with clikpic

thanks all

Hi Fleyeing,

And what happens if the site which sold you the domain name for 10$ a year decides that the next ywar it's 100$???

I think it's pretty much the same.

Ami.

if you buy a domain you could try a free host like sites.google.com . It's very good for beginers.

Ive decided to go with clikpic now. I found you can make an almost perfect professional website for £35 a year plus £6 a year for a domain and you get to use 100 images in that site.

If you want to use more images then you pay for that but im not sure you would really need to showcase more than 100
