Stock imaging is a business. Like everyone else, I have had to learn it. How:

-I read the forums. We are lucky here to have admins who will keep threads like this open (even though they must get tired of them) and post useful info.
-I try to be smart about writing keywords, titles and descriptions. It's not just the image which sells the image.
-I try to submit quality images, and a lot of them, of course.

But I know that even if I do all of the above, I will experience some ups and downs. But hopefully, the ups will be higher and the lows less low as I go.

Stock imaging is a business, we all have to learn it as we go and it evolves. If things change (such as search engine algorithms), we need to learn all we can about the changes and adapt to them, IMO.

FINALLY!

Someone talking good sense, i'm very new to the stock images game and realise i'm not going to get rich overnight but do hope that in the future i'll have a wee steady pocket money income to show for my hard work. But that i know will come in time as i learn more about the business. DT is my favourite site even though they reject about four 5ths of my uploads that other sites accept but i do get more sales here with the smaller portfolio. So well done to the man above for some words that make good sense.

My own experience shows that my sales dived within a day or two of the launch of the new search engine and have not yet recovered.

Many sample searches are now dominated by those with very large portfolios.

The new search system counts against the new contributor to such an extent that my initial months of work here have been destroyed.

Nonetheless, I can understand why an agency would want to place some priority on established photographers with a proven track record of positive sales.

There's no way the system does that, this was explained before so please read the appropriate threads. No offense, but posting this without even checking is completely misleading to other users.

The search system is based on relevance mostly. Then there is an importance given to the image, with a few connections to the photographer's experience. The new images are a part of the equation. It is all balanced with various factors included in order to cover all users while bring up the most relevant images.

Don't say that if you are new, you don't get any results, or that if the image is new it is completely favored. If you follow the advices given above, your sales will increase. Don't focus the placement in the engine, let the agency do that.
There is no way that one will not get steady and increasing sales if he follows these suggestions.

Actually we are hitting the 'dry spells' of the summer months ;) so it is not just Dreamstime where some of us see our DLs dip....

May is down for me accross all of the sites

Like already said by Serban and others the way to go is to keep uploading Hot Images and let things take care of themselves.

says she who has not uploaded for months oops lol

well said and yes i totally agree. I had a period of getting used to my new camera where i only got 2 or 4 or so uploads accepted for a couple of months, this last month i have gone for it and uploaded more as the weather has improved as i don't do the studio shots, if this 3 month thing someone said about earlier is right, then i am going to be at a dry sprell now, i'll keep learning, i'll keep uploading and most important of all i'll try to diversify more too :-)

thanks to the admins and mods for letting us discuss our concerns and learn from other contributors and yourselfs a little bit more about this business :-)

Well, you might be right Achilles. Presumably you have more knowledge of these things than me.

All I can say is that in my particular case I was making good progress at Dreamstime and I was pleased and enthusiastic.

My sales were on a steady upwards path; I reached my best ever week at exactly the moment the new search system was introduced; since then my sales have dropped to such low levels that I do not even bother to look at the numbers any more.

It is not seasonal; it is not that I haven't been uploading new and varied high quality images; it is simply the new search system. Nothing else.

I shall continue to upload to Dreamstime and hope and pray that the situation changes. Perhaps it will eventually. But for the moment, here is one previously enthusiastic contributor who is disillusioned.

This month was very good for me here and not booming on all site like Lisa said, so I can't complain myself but I know that in order to get more sales I will have to upload better and more diverse images.

My sales here have always 'behaved' like described. I will go for an extended time(days) with nothing, and then the flood gates open. Never could figure it out, but my overall totals here are always 2nd/3rd place so I don't pay much attention to it anymore. I know the sales will be back with a vengence soon. Incidentally, my sales last month were off a bit, but this month has been quite good again.

The holiday weekend in the US is a factor in sales, but beyond just that one day. Many ad campaigns are targeted to a holiday; in the time before that holiday designers are working on the campaign so they are needing and buying images. The project is (hopefully) completed prior to the event(s) to allow for printing, publishing, etc. This leaves a little lul slightly prior to the holday and for a little while after while new projects are getting wound up. So, its not just missing the one day of sales, but also a pattern in the demand for images.

I know DT isn't interested in disclosing total sales as someone requested above; but it would be helpfull if the general trend was available. Maybe just a line added to our sales graphs proportional to DT total sales (but of course not providing actual numbers) would serve both parties.

If it makes you happy, I also notice a decline in my sales. It's obvious. I used to be in top contributors one year ago. Now, the minimum is 3,000 images and I don't even have half of that. The quality of my portfolio didn't increase the pace the rest of the photographers' did. Just checked Photoeuphoria, Photoshow, Andres or Yuri's portfolios. Compared their first submissions with the latest ones. The difference is huge, all their last submissions are pro quality. And the list goes on, it would be impossible to mention all users. Not to say Ron is now the top contributor after only a few months.

Do I complain about the search engine? I even know exactly how it works. But no, it's not there, it is ONLY in my power to increase my sales. So, I advise you that instead of complaining about having lower sales, to focus on increasing the quality that you provide. I don't want this to sound offensive, take it just as a personal suggestion.

PS: and just to assure you that the agency does its job, the increase in sales for May 2007 compared to May 2006 is with 100% higher than the increase in photographers for the same months. We are close to 1,000 photographers per month and the increase in photographers is very high compared to May 2006. The values speak for themselves. Amount in sales is double than the rate we grow in photographers number.

I have same problem. In March I had great growth in sale here, and in April goes down and now in May it is almost half of March/2007.

Achilles@You allowed Ron to be Top contributor in one month, otherwise they'll need 70 days to upload all photos ;-) Think about that, and I think you shouldn't mention that as good move.

For me it is my second best month and might be my best month if I get a few further dls today. Whenever there is a change in the search engine it could have an effect on dls. Some have more some have less. The bigger picture has Dreamstime not the single contributer. If they earn more we earn more, so it is in their best interest that we overall have more dls. Thats the way I see it and where I have to trust them.

I believe quality not quantity is the way to go. I tried out both ways. There was a time where I just submitted plenty of photos which were average or less then average. But what I discoverd is that 30 of them and their number of dls cannot match a really good creative appealing quality image. So my advise is do not spend plenty of time on uploading many low quality images, but take you time to produce excellent images even if you will have a lot less photos online. Lately there were images where I spend an hour just for one to create and correct it.Not all turned out to be good sellers, maybe it is also too early to say, but some of them did really well. While with the "quantity images" I uploaded it was quite unusual that one did well.

For me there is still a long way to go to have a lot of quality images, but if I or you are there, buyers will find mine or your images and the bigger your portfolio the lesser you are affected by search engine changes.

I am very happy with my sales here at Dreamstime. I have seen steady increases over the past two years since joining and last few months are no exception. This month looks like it will be about equal to April if the next couple of days stay steady with recent trends.

Of course the 3 day weekend meant lower sales for Monday, and with much of the world heading into summer, we can all expect sales to be a bit soft in June and July. I have been contributing here and other micros for just over two years and the summer is always a slow time because buyers are taking holidays and maybe not working all that hard.

If it's any comfort, my sales at all sites are not booming, but they are steady and if I manage to hold steady through the summer that is just fine with me. Boom times will return in the Autumn.

Meanwhile this is a great time to work on new concepts and uploading fresh images.

Wise words from Lisa as always. My own sales in May have again been steady and will either be my best or 2nd best month depending on how things go today __ that's how close it is. I actually find sales at DT to be the most consistent of all the agencies I contribute to. Compared to May 2006 my income at DT is up about 25%.

Vgajic, Ron was not favored and they started to upload since March. They did use a glitch discovered a couple of months ago, for about one or two weeks when they uploaded more than the maximum limit. That glitch was available to all site's contributors and many of them took advantage (quietly) of it. Some contributors uploaded twice than what Ron did. When we discovered it, we already had a huge pending line and nothing we could do but reviews.

I have explained this in detail on an independent forum a while ago, where we have been accused of favoring Ron. This is not true, although if we wanted to, we could've done it and made it public. Why didn't we do it? Because it would've been unfair competition to the other contributors.
