Price updates and strategy for 2007

2006 was our best year, we exceeded the best predictions, each month set a new record and what matters most, our growth continues at a dramatic and steady pace. 2007 already looks to be a great year and we have no reason to doubt it will set new records for us within the industry.

Dreamstime launched lots of features, among which I will only refer a few:
- In the News - the photojournalism-oriented section that transforms snapshots into news-worthy images
- Keymasters and Keymentors - empowering the users to improve the quality of the database
- Additional Formats - providing vectors and RAW formats to buyers
- Integrated subscription plans - combining the power of a subscription plan with the flexibility of the credit-based packages
- Extended Licenses: I-EL, W-EL, P-EL and full ownership SR-EL
- FTP Mass Upload - fast and reliable upload procedures for high-size portfolios
- the DreamFinder - the next generation search engine, unique in stock photography

Each of these features is uniquely designed with our community's needs in mind. Most of them are original and revolutionary features in worldwide stock photography and this sets Dreamstime as a creator of new standards within the industry.

2007 gets closer and closer, so here are a few details about our strategy. We are part of a very active industry so keep in mind that this strategy is constantly updated in order to provide the best choice for our members.

New level-based structure (release date - Feb. 15, 2007):

Considering that the number of submissions was much higher than expected (our database increased over 4 times in 2006 alone), the levels are outdated the way they were designed, almost 3 years ago.

Consequently, here is a new chart with updated download intervals:

New resolution versions (release date - Feb. 15, 2007):

In the last years we stressed that the quality of the images is much more important than the amount of pixels in the image. We will reach 1,000,000 images online soon and our selection is widely regarded as one of the strongest in the industry. It is time to provide better royalties to the contributors that upgraded their equipment and are able to provide larger images. The levels still assure that quality comes first.

Starting Feb 15. here is the new structure based on image size in pixels:

Subscription plans update (release date - Feb. 15, 2007):

In order to promote them agressively the subscription plans awarded 100% commissions to the contributors when spent at maximum. Starting Feb 15. we will apply the same royalties percentage: 50% for non-exclusive contributors and 60% for exclusive contributors or exclusive submissions, while still adding a significant bonus.

The prices will be updated as it follows. Royalties mentioned only for non-exclusives. Exclusive contributors and exclusive images will receive $0.30/download.

Just as before, the credits or subscription plans acquired previously will download images at the old prices.

Extended licenses (released):

The success we receive with the holiday sale, made us decide to continue with this pricing for the year to come. The prices we announced one month ago will remain unchanged in the year to come.

Free section (released):

There are two main reasons behind this price update:

1. To provide a significant increase in royalties to our contributors without neglecting the buyers.
This is possible thanks to our level-based system that enables popular older files to be sold at a higher price, but keep a very attractive pricing for the fresh images.

2. To fill part of the gap between our market niche and the pricing of the traditional agencies; our content improves with each day that passes so the top levels will start to compete more and more with images from this area. Although our top prices do not change (in fact the price for the highest level just decreased from 10 to 8 credits) a significant part of our database will be sold at a higher price.

We will not neglect the part of the market that made us successful and for this part, we are now launching a new section, an upgrade of the existent Free image of the day!

Who said that 2006 was extremely active in stock photography industry was right. But wait to see what 2007 brings!

Dream for more, OUR future looks GREAT!

Details about the Free Images Section:

The feature is a significant addition to the Free section, in fact a whole new section of the site that interacts with the current database. Christmas brings new prices to the photographers and it also brings a free section to the designers.

The number of donations we receive for the free section is overwhelming so we are not able to keep the pace, we have everything scheduled for the whole next year already....and that's only by selecting the best donations, thus refusing lots of photos.

We will be exceeding 1,000,000 images soon and at that point we will start cleaning up the database. The first ones on this list will be images older than one year with no downloads.

The Free section is a "preview" of that point, when images will start to be deleted and the contributor will have the option to leave them for a while in this section, in order to promote their portfolio or simply delete them.

The main purposes of this section are:
1. to attract new buyers from the lower end of the market
2. to promote contributors portfolios, by allowing buyers to see the quality of the lower end of the database. Something like "if we're giving these for free, imagine how the commercial images look like".

There are two ways for contributors to "feed" the Free section:

1. by donating images that were online for at least 12 months and have no downloads.
If you want to donate images, please use the option available on the main page of the section. Check your older files and see if you want to donate anything that didn't sell. Remember that in order to receive, you have to give something.

2. at submission time.

By checking the following option on the submission page:
"If this submission doesn't qualify for the commercial stock section, I agree to make it available within the free section (RF-LL license)."
you can upload images in this section if they are refused but fit the minimum requirements (legal: copyright, model-release, creative: composition, lighting, subject's character). If the image has problems that can be fixed, it will still be refused, in order to allow you to resubmit it.

A new type of license was introduced in order to allow us to monitor all the activity in the free section carefuly. The Royalty-Free Limited License (RF-LL) is the regular RF license limited to 10,000 copies. We expect a few hundreds of downloads for each image in the next months, up to thousands for the better ones. Once donated, an image cannot be reverted back so make sure you choose wisely. The only way an image can make its way back (if donated) or for the first time (if refused but accepted for the free section) is if it meets certain requirements. An algorithm will be designed at a later date, for transferring most popular images and selling them as RF commercial stock.

The future size of this database will be limited to MAX. 1% compared to the database.
We limit the number of images one user can donate, to 10 images per day. This database will grow slowly, we don't want to see any interpherence with the commercial database.

Buyers will be carefuly monitored and different requirements may be imposed for limiting the access to this section and maximizing our target. Once again, this is not supposed to affect your number of RF sales, but to increase them.

From time to time, the activity in the free database will be analysed: successful images will be transfered into the commercial database and old images will be deleted permanently. Activity for each image is recorded and kept for future reference; all downloads will be archived considering the images are licensed - even if there was no price involved, the usage requirements still apply.

Editors received specific instructions about the selection criteria. Contributors shouldn't be worried that editors will refuse their files just to see them into the free section. Actually, the criteria selection at this point will not change. Only images that are otherwise to be refused will make it in this section.

Visit the Free Images section

Merry Christmas! :)

Fair enough, the marketplace is changing constantly and businesses have to evolve but a 1 month sale on EL extending to a year is quite frankly taking the ****. I would have expected the print EL to have increased in price - maybe not to its original level but at least to an amount that reflects how the image can be used. I had planned on increasing my portfolio here but as the goalposts have just been drastically changed I think it may be time to reconsider.

The new pricing structure looks good to me. I have had a PL sale during the 'sale' and nothing before then so I can see how there is pressure for DT to keep these prices. I would quite like to see a review of these after three months.

One question...will the new levels apply retrospectively to existing images in the database? And I wonder how buyers will react to paying 5 credits for a websize Level 5 image?

But all in all, looks like a great pay rise to me so thanks DT!

Before taking the decision to keep the mentioned prices for the extended license marketing research has been conducted. The previous prices simply didn't attract enough buyers and sales were scarce; while the new prices attract much more customers, a lot of times they buy all 3 licenses for the same image.
I remember that half a year ago we didn't have these licenses and people were earning just from the normal licenses. This is a chance to sell more and take over a bigger part of the market.
Of course, people can choose not to sell for the given prices if they think they are too low but it would be a shame to loose potential buyers.
The bottom of line is that when you are in competition as tight as the microstock market is you have to stay on top. Keeping in mind that we are continuously growing an evolving so do our services.

The new levels will apply to all images, old and new. The level 3 images we have now and that will become level 5 in the future cost 5 credits as well, so the difference will not be that big. The novelty comes in categorizing the images in more resolutions then before.

All sounds good. Not doubting the fact that DT will have researched the new prices carefully. Like I said, I've had a sale at the sale price but none before so it must be attracting some interest.

Can't wait for the price rises - finally a decent Christmas present :) (well, early Valentine's Day present!)

Will images that are deleted after having had no downloads for a year be those in the free section or will that apply to all pictures on the database?

Thanks for the extra information regarding the ELs, if that had been explained in the original post I guess my initial reaction would have been a little less harsh.

Wow this is excellent news, DT you have made my day!!!!!!!
This increase is excellent for us as contribuitors without breaking the bank for buyers.

Just brilliant, look forward to the changes

oh and about the Extended Licences, I never had any of these sales before but since the holiday sale started I have had 3 I think so it's definately worth leaving the ELs at those lower prices, good move too.

Excellent,

Really like the changes.

One question about the free image section. How can you view how old an image is to see if it is over a year old?

This is terrific news and very motivating!

I have a question with relation to the size. I have a 20d and a 30d. Both take images at 8.2mp. Would that qualify as a "Large Size" or as a "Maximum Size"?

Thanks!

What about if a designer downloads an image from the free section and then decides they want to use it for more than the free license allows, will they be able to pay for a regular or extended license for that image?

The EOS 350 takes 7,962,624 (3456x2304) pixels which is less than 8Mpx, however the camera is considered as a 8Mpx camera...

How will be calculated the megapixel number? Calculating with 2 decimals it is 7.96 but with one decimal precision is 8.0.

The question: should the 350D users change their camera bodies to get over the 8Mpx boundary?

I hope so!!!

Mev, if a designer requests this, the image will be transferred in the RF section. This is already mentioned in the terms. A special feature will be designed for this if the demand is high (similar to request additional format).

Icefront, you are right, this is kept in mind, my previous post was a little bit misleading. Just as 3MP limit applied now when accepting submissions, allows 2.90 MP files to actually make it through, the limit of the sensor as opposed to effective pixels will be kept in mind.

Badboo, level 2 images will be level 4. Assignment files will be automatically boosted to level 4. Btw did you see our latest theme? ;)

Did I read correctly that we will have the OPTION to leave 1 year -> no download images in the free section? Conversely then, I would assume that we can just let them be deleted. Just because no buyer on this site downloaded the image, that doesn't mean they don't sell elsewhere, so why would I want to give them away here and cut my own throat elsewhere?
