I recently uploaded a number of editorial images and noticed something interesting about the rights options. Apparently SR-EL isn't available for editorial images. I can understand that since the description of SR-EL says that the new owner can use the images however they like and that's obviously not acceptable for editorial images.
However, it makes me wonder if there couldn't be some sort of modified SR-EL sort of like the new Time Limited SR-EL that would allow buyers to have exclusive editorial rights to the image for a limited amount of time. I've read that there are buyers out there (major news outlets) who avoid using DT's editorial images because they can't be guaranteed image exclusivity. This might be a way to solve that problem and open them up to more buyers. What do you think, DT? |

I second the recommendation .. I think this could have great value to consumers of news or event type photos. |

The SR-ELs only grant exclusivity from future buyers of images. If another sale has already happened there is no way your could retract that previous sale. It could only work if the image was exclusive with no sales, AND the contributor somehow guaranteed they hadn't sold it before.
There are lots of reasons for buying the SR-EL license other than exclusivity on RF images, and many of those don't apply (i.e. you aren't subject to the 10,000 copy limit on Editorial, or printing/selling on the web, etc.).
To me the main issue for news outlets is that DT doesn't offer timely enough reviews on weekends for breaking news. This encourages editorial content that is more timeless and works well for selling more than once. If it isn't breaking news, I don't know why they would want/need exclusivity... |

This would frequently be the case for news type items where exclusivity is important, assuming that we could get them reviewed AND posted in a timely manner. People interested in exclusivity are looking for them very soon after they're posted and while they're still fresh, so they're not likely to have many, if any, sales yet.

Which is why I suggested a "modified" SR-EL rather than the standard one used for commercial photos.

I agree that this is a huge problem. DT seems to update their database only about every two business days. Therefore, it's easily possible that a photo taken on Thursday morning, uploaded Thursday afternoon and approved by Friday morning wouldn't appear in the database until Tuesday -- and that assumes a very speedy review time. It's far from an ideal situation. This needs to change in addition to the exclusivity issue for DT to become a real player in the editorial news field. |

I'm not quite sure about that. It's not something to be done manually, it's just technical processing time. There are no business days or weekends for the servers. |

I'm just telling you what I've observed. I can't speculate as to the reason for it. |
